When autumn comes, you’ll see me collecting nuts for the winter. For this reason, legend has it that I am a great saver and therefore represent your capacity to save or build your survival. But do not be fooled.
While I save for the winter, when spring comes my savings are almost empty, while my heart is full, for I have enjoyed the fruits of my savings throughout the winter months with my family.
I’m here to remind you that the fruits of your life, your money, is meant to come and go. It is energy that needs to flow to simply be. So don’t be scared of scarcity, as every season will present you with different fruits and opportunities to survive and enjoy life.

I am famous for my capacity to gather nuts and sustenance for the winter, but the truth is, I often forget many of my stashes.
You could choose to judge me as forgetful or lacking thoroughness; however, if I really needed them, I would have remembered. There is a bit of magic there, too: what I leave behind often becomes the tree that offers food to me or my children in the near future.

As the squirrel is not present in Greek mythology, which is usually my area of exploration, I have looked instead to other European myths and folklore. I am certain that North America also holds rich folklore and Native stories regarding the squirrel; however, as I was born and live in Europe, I find it more pertinent to explore the wisdom closest to my own roots.
European myths and folklore are often disregarded in today’s spirituality, having been overshadowed by Christianity over the centuries. While a few countries, like Greece, keep these stories alive within their educational systems, many others no longer have temples to remind them of this legacy. Consequently, it may be easier for Greeks than for others to stay connected with their ancestral knowledge.
Yet, when exploring animal spirits, these myths truly have profound messages to share. These messages are often deeply connected to the culture and environment from which they originated. In my opinion, it is valuable to connect with the tales and stories of your continent of origin, as they speak beyond time to your cells and ancestral memories. Therefore, if you are not from Europe, I encourage you to complement your reading by exploring the stories of the squirrel in your own region.
The Squirrel in Norse Mythology: The Messenger Ratatoskr
While the squirrel does not tread the stages of Greek mythology, it holds a place of honour in the frost-kissed tales of the North. In Norse mythology, the cosmos is held together by Yggdrasil, the immense ash tree that connects all nine worlds. And running up and down its vast trunk is Ratatoskr, a nimble squirrel whose role is far more significant than mere scampering.
At the very crown of Yggdrasil sits a great eagle, representing the heights of wisdom, the sky, and our highest aspirations. Deep beneath the roots, coiled in the darkness, lies Níðhöggr, a dragon who lives at the foundations of the world, embodying the underworld, our primal fears, and the shadows we often try to ignore. These two powerful forces seem worlds apart, locked in an ancient tension. Yet, they are not silent. They are connected by Ratatoskr.
This little squirrel acts as the ultimate messenger, fearlessly darting between the eagle and the dragon, carrying words, insults, and truths from the highest peak to the deepest root. Some might see Ratatoskr as a mischief-maker, stirring up trouble between giants. But if we look closer, we see a profound spiritual truth: connection requires a messenger.
Without Ratatoskr, the wisdom of the eagle would remain distant and cold, while the power of the dragon would stay buried and unchecked. The squirrel ensures that energy flows between our highest dreams and our deepest instincts. It reminds us that we cannot simply live in the light; we must also be willing to visit our shadows. We must be brave enough to carry messages between the parts of ourselves that want to soar and the parts that feel grounded, or even stuck.
Ratatoskr invites us to become the bridge within our own lives. It asks us to run fearlessly between our ambitions and our fears, integrating them into a whole. By doing so, we ensure that no part of our spirit is left in isolation, and that the tree of our life remains strong, fed by both the sun above and the earth below.

The Squirrel in Folklore: Preparation, Vitality, and Trust
In many European folklore, the squirrel is revered as a gatherer, for its vitality and as a teacher of trust of nature’s cycles. Unlike the ant, which is often cited in fables for its relentless, anxious labour, the squirrel embodies a more fluid relationship with abundance.
The squirrel appears as a symbol of preparedness without fear in many traditional tales. Preparedness because it works diligently through the autumn’s golden days to burying nuts in countless hiding spots. Without fear? Well, we are not in the squirrel’s mind, but one sees this habit as a natural way to sustain winter’s needs just like some prepare conserves to be able to access their favourite veggies and fruits taste even in the midst of the winter. Though to be fair, at a time with no supermarket, it was not preparedness with fear but common sense to ensure basic needs over the winter. Especially in rural areas that could be secluded from the rest of the world by heavy snow.
Now the squirrel might be great at preparing the ground for future sustenance, but it is equally good at forgetting where are many of their stash. Folklore sees this forgetfulness as a sacred act of faith and transmission rather than a flaw. By leaving some nuts behind, the squirrel inadvertently plants the forests of the future. This teaches us that our efforts to save and prepare are not just for our own survival, but are seeds for a legacy we may never fully see.
Furthermore, the squirrel’s boundless energy represents life force and vitality.
In Celtic traditions, animals that moved swiftly between the earth and the trees were often seen as messengers capable of navigating different realms of consciousness.
The squirrel’s ability to remain still one moment and burst into motion the next mirrors the rhythm of our own life force, knowing when to rest and when to act with explosive joy. It invites us to trust that just as the forest provides for the squirrel in every season, the universe will provide for us, allowing us to enjoy the fruits of our labour without the heavy burden of scarcity.
