The Turtle of Aegina: A Journey from Ancient Coinage to Personal Empowerment

Did you know that Aegina, an island in the Saronic Gulf, was the first place in Europe to start minting coins?

Aegina's prime location made, it a key maritime hub, connecting mainland Greece, the Peloponnese, Crete, and Asia Minor. By the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, Aegina had grown into a major sea-trading power, exchanging goods like grain, wine, olive oil, pottery, and metalwork throughout the eastern Mediterranean.

Exposure to trade with Lydia (present-day Turkey) and Asia Minor introduced the islanders to the earliest forms of coinage, which began in the kingdom of Lydia around 620 BCE.

Seeing how coins eased trade and exchange abroad, Aegina merchants quickly understood the benefits of using the same system at home.

So when the island began minting coins around 560 BCE, it made sense to choose a creature of the sea as its emblem. The turtle encompassed a wide area or symbolism dear to Aegina:

  • The island’s connection to the ocean
  • Its dependence on maritime trade
  • Its slow but steady prosperity — wealth that accumulated through patience and persistence

The sea turtle, gliding through the Mediterranean, became a fitting metaphor for Aegina’s trading ships — steady, enduring, purposeful.

Following Athens’ victory over Aegina in the mid-5th century BCE, the Athenian government replaced the sea turtle on Aegina’s coins with a land tortoise. Historians interpret this shift as a symbol of: Aegina’s lost maritime autonomy. A diminished, more compliant identity under Athenian rule. Despite this change, the turtle, in either form, remained Aegina’s defining emblem, so much so that it’s still featured on the island’s modern municipal flag and crest.

A connection to Aphrodite and ancient wisdom

The turtle was probably also chosen for its connection to Aphrodite, goddess of fertility, abundance, grace, protection, and balance between movement and stillness. After all, having a coin that represents abundance and steady growth is quite appropriate for a coin.

Sailors, merchants and citizen alike also understood the turtle embodied:

  • Endurance and longevity (it lives long and moves deliberately)
  • Wisdom and protection (its shell as armour, symbolising safety in travel)
  • Groundedness amidst motion — moving between two worlds: the sea (emotion, intuition) and the land (stability, practicality).

This duality mirrored the life of Aegina itself: a small island navigating between powers, balancing independence with alliance, trade with diplomacy.

Over 2,500 years later, the turtle still represents Aegina’s soul:

  • Its island wisdom
  • Its abundance through connection
  • Its spirit of trade, craft, and endurance

The turtle reminds us that power doesn’t always roar — sometimes, it glides quietly beneath the surface, moving steadily toward its purpose.

    The turtle-coin was a marker of trade, value, and exchange. When you adopt this symbol, you invite the mindset of abundance: seeing value in what you create, recognising exchange (not just material but energetic) and trusting that your work holds worth.

      Turtle as an animal-spirit asks you to move with patience, to trust the process, and to carry your “home” within yourself—your values, your purpose. In practice: when you wear a product with this symbol, it can remind you to stay steady in the journey.

      Since the turtle-coins facilitated trade across boundaries, the emblem encourages relating, giving and receiving, and connection with others.

        Turtle in Ancient Greek Myth & Growth

        In Greek mythology, the Nymphe Chelone, who lived happily by a running river, decided not to attend Zeus’ wedding. Zeus invited all humans, animals, and gods to his wedding, but Chelone didn’t attend. When Zeus asked her why she hadn’t attended, she answered that she preferred her home. Vexed, Zeus made her carry her house until the end of her life as a punishment. Hermes allegedly invented the lyre using a turtle shell and the entrails of a sacred cow. The story goes that he stole one of Apollo’s sacred cows, offered her body to the gods, and kept its entrails to create seven cords that he then attached to a turtle shell. Apollo, initially furious, fell in love with the beautiful sound of the lyre and demanded the instrument as reparation.

        While in the Greek myth of Chelone, the turtle shell is seen as a punishment, one could wonder if it was not the best gift she ever received. She portrayed the positive aspects of feeling connected to her environment and happy with her surroundings. Though we are not in her mind, we can’t really know if it was because that was where she felt happy or safe. Your shell can serve as a protective barrier against the harshness of the external world. While it is needed at times, it can also prevent you from discovering that the external world also has beauty and love to offer. The sea turtle is a very ancient species; the most ancient trace of their existence dates back 260 million years. Of course, just like human, they evolved throughout millennia, even if their appearance didn’t change much. As a result, in many minds, the turtle represents longevity, resilience, and perseverance. The turtle also symbolises ancient wisdom, reminding you that all the resources you need to evolve in your life already exist within you. You carry them since birth, yet it is up to you to go within and look for them. It does not mean you have to do everything on your own; turtles are sociable, but you need to validate your inner truth and stop giving away your power to others‘ truth, affirmation, or techniques. You can be inspired, but you need to grow your own style.
