The Power Of Creativity

The Power Of Creativity

Let's take a moment to discuss creativity. I don't know if you consider yourself creative or what your definition of creativity might be. I often hear people say they are not creative in my shop. It pains me because I know they are more creative than they think; they just don't see it because of this confusion between artwork and creativity.

If, as an artist today, creativity implies having fun with colours and materials to make something I love, this has not always been the case. In my former career as an executive assistant, creativity was about crafting workflows, building organisational systems, and creating Word or Excel templates or finding solutions.

Many people believe they are not creative simply because their creativity is practical rather than artistic. Yet creativity is unlimited and can take many forms, including cooking, crafting, making art, playing music, developing eco-friendly solutions, upcycling furniture, creating IT programs, designing paper calendars, etc. Therefore, if you believe you are not creative, I'd love for you to welcome this power of yours.

Why am I so keen for you to acknowledge your creative energy?

Well, there are twofold: one is about the untold power of creativity, and the other is about your future.

The Secret Power Of Creativity.

Creativity was encouraged in school for a good reason. First, children need moments of relaxation and fun to learn effectively. This principle remains true in adulthood: the more relaxed and engaged you are in the moment, the easier it becomes to learn and assimilate new information. It's a refreshing challenge to the notion that learning only comes through hardship and suffering, isn't it?

Second, creativity trains your brain to be flexible, find solutions, and recognise opportunities. It teaches you how to transform ideas, repurpose objects or transform materials, and tangibly engage with the world. The more you harness your creativity, the more you will apply these skills throughout your life.

As adults, many begin to find these "recreational" activities dull or superficial because they feel that "they should be serious now that they are grown-up." Yet, training their creative minds helps them navigate life, find solutions in their workplace, see potentialities, adapt, and improve objects or processes.

But you may not know something about your brain: when you tell it something, it believes you and obeys your command. Therefore, when you state out loud that you are not creative, it hears you and starts demoting the value of your creative energy. As a result, flexibility will require more effort, and seeing outside the box will rarely occur. And there is more: your solution-finding skills might shrink, and you may find yourself seeking others' solutions, which in turn might lead you to think others know better (while it is true about some subjects, it is not always the case and you want to be able to see your genius as much as others).

Now, the good news is that creativity is one of the divine sparks in you, and you can never totally get rid of it. What you want, though, is to muscle it just like you did as a kid.

Creativity is your future.

With AI expansion, your creativity is needed more than ever. The inclusion of mechanisation in the industrial era already made the human hand obsolete in factories. Computer programming and AI expansion will bring that obsolescence also present in offices, and many people will need to reinvent themselves and find new careers or paths. And if it impacts you directly, it is your creativity that will help you find solutions, adapt, and get back on your feet.

For now, AI is not really intelligence, at least not what is sold to us as AI. It is more often algorithms playing with rules and patterns. It is, therefore, our human creativity, our capacity to create through heart, intuition, practical thinking, and much more that makes us special. Using the combination of your heart and creativity will help you create solutions that combine practicality, compassion, respect for life, sustainability, and much more.

Creativity is not only about art; it is an energy that fuels courage, unconventional thinking, and solution-finding. Innovations come to life through creativity.

This is why you want to recognise and nurture your creativity. But how?

Well, first recognise that when you are using your hands to make something, whether it is out of a recipe or inspired by something you saw on Pinterest or Instagram, you are creating. You are combining elements to create.

Second, start noticing each time you add your little unique spark (it might be a spice, a colour, or a different material because you didn't have what was on the model). These are the moments you tap into your solution finder, your spark of creativity.

Third, muscle these skills of yours intentionally while having fun. Crafting is a great way to do so, because you will use your hands, your senses (vision, touch, smell and maybe even taste), and your heart. Music, cooking, gardening are really efficient too. Of course you can create with computers, but one thing I noticed, is that often, it brings you back into your mind rather than being a form of expression where your emotions and intuition can fuel your creative process.

How could creativity improve your life?

Well, looking back on the 2019-2021 period, something striking happened, and it went quite unnoticed. Invention patents for renewable energies skyrocketed, and so did many ecological invention patents. Many of these inventions could help us reduce our electricity bills and respect the planet more, should we not be distracted by the fear of lack of security (financial and/or physical).

Artistry and poetry were also way more present on social media, as people had time on their hands to create. Beauty, music, cooking recipes, craft, and wellness activities were more easily shared on social media (and actually helped many people pivot into a new career and passion).

That raises the question of what we could create if we were not distracted by exhausting jobs to meet both ends and hypnotised by a TV screen, fear-based news, and manipulative media wanting to make us buy stuff.
